Winter hiking in Mühlviertel
Experience peace in the land of the 1,000 hills
The snow is scrunching under the shoes and the breath rises as tine clouds into the crystal-clear air: During a winter hike the gently hilly landscapes of Mühlviertler Kernland present their most beautiful sides.
The Mühlviertler Kernland is perfect for winter hikes. A well developed network of paths is sign-posted with yellow signs. During the winter the 750km of hiking paths are all groomed.
Hiking in picturesque Mühlviertel
Discover Mühlviertel from a totally different side: Where lush meadows, forests and creeks characterise the landscapes in summer, everything is covered with glistering snow in the winter. Frozen creeks, snow-covered treetops and muted noises create a unique atmosphere. In between you will find typical “Steinbloß”-style farms and the town’s steeples. We recommend the following winter tours:
Plöckenstein (1,378m)
Start: car park in Oberschwarzenberg (943m)
Ascent: 2hrs 20mins
Descent: 1hr 30mins
Follow the path of the Böhmerwald circular walk before you leave your own traces in the snow on the way up to the summit. A challenging tour with a fantastic panorama on top!
Bärenstein (1,077m)
Start: Haselgruber agricultural road (608m)
Ascent: 2hrs 30mins
Descent: 1hr
This tour is perfect for snowshoe hiking! Agricultural and forest road and then through the deep powder snow uphill. The last metres you will trudge over rock stairs with railings up to Bärenstein. The reward is the view over Dachstein and the Moldau reservoir.
Ochsenberg (1,022m)
Start: Ruben (866m)
Ascent: 1hr 25mins
Descent: 1hr 10mins
Follow the agricultural road to Ruben and then you will walk over a forest road, a gravel road, past the Schneidermauer (1,010m) and then straight up to Ochsenberg summit at 1,022 metres.
Don’t forget comfort during your hike and take a break at one of the various mountain restaurants along the way for a lovely snack! Warm hospitality and a region that is rich in culture is waiting for you. Send us your no obligation holiday enquiry today.
